Lithium has become a strategic resource in the 21st century, driven by the growing demand for batteries used in electronic devices, electric vehicles and renewable energy storage systems, such as wind and photovoltaic, making this metal key to the energy transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hence the importance of the agreement between SQM and Codelco and the recent announcements within the framework of the National Lithium Strategy, regarding the results of the Request for Information (RFI). 88 RFIs were received: 8 in Arica and Parinacota, 24 in Tarapac\u00e1, 40 in Antofagasta and 16 in Atacama. Of these, 53 referred to 16 salt flats or saline lagoons registered by the National Geology and Mining Service (Sernageomin), while 28 were on other deposits. On the other hand, 7 demonstrations were located in salt flats or areas excluded from this process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, Chilean production is mainly focused on the Salar de Atacama, where companies such as SQM and Albemarle have established extraction operations. The high concentration of lithium in the salt flat and arid environment facilitates the evaporation of salt water, thus optimizing the extraction process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, one of the challenges currently faced by mining companies is the technologies used in the extraction of the metal. Today, lithium is obtained mainly from hard rock (Australia) and continental brine (Chile and Argentina), using the latter evaporitic technology, which is based on evaporation in the open air to concentrate the brine. This process can take between 10 and 24 months, which generates a certain rigidity in the market and does not allow it to respond to short-term changes in demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is why new technologies are being developed today, generically called “Direct Lithium Extraction” (DEL), which could allow the processing of continental brines avoiding evaporation pools. Although these technologies are currently being used on a small industrial scale and at the level of pilot plants, everything indicates that the future of lithium extraction is going that way. More than 80% of the projects submitted by the RFI showed interest in the use of LED technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chile is in a unique position to lead and win the gold medal in this market, in which Pares & Alvarez has been developing projects in both Chile and Argentina for more than 10 years. However, it is essential that, in the short and medium term, the authorities address with agility and efficiency the processes necessary for the development of the lithium industry. Global competition is increasing; countries such as Argentina, Australia and the United States are investing and developing their own production capacities, which could affect Chile’s current position.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
