Mining, as the backbone of the Chilean economy, faces a crucial challenge today: to ensure economic profitability without neglecting sustainability. Therefore, we are in a context of increasing demands from communities, regulators and international markets, where mining projects must address sustainability from the early stages, especially from the pre-investment evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But why is it important to include this component in the pre-investment phase? Because it is at this stage where the economic and technical viability of a project is defined, including aspects such as the quality of the deposit, extraction costs and the necessary infrastructures, among other factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sustainability considers all the human processes associated with a project, such as water efficiency, emission reduction, care for flora and fauna and waste management, among others. Therefore, including these factors in the pre-investment stage not only contributes to minimizing the impacts of a project, but can also be a determining factor when it comes to attracting financing. Today, investment funds and shareholders of companies are, in many cases, conditioned by ESG (environmental, social and governance) principles and, therefore, will not support projects that do not comply with these standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, the pre-investment evaluation with sustainability criteria allows identifying opportunities for innovation and development of clean technologies. For example, the use of renewable energies or the reuse of water, which can reduce costs in the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, considering social aspects in pre-investment evaluations is also key. The early inclusion of communities in project planning, in addition to being a component that strengthens relationships of trust, is also an aspect that can prevent socio-environmental conflicts that, in many cases, could translate into costly stoppages and prolonged legal disputes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this reason, establishing sustainability criteria from a pre-investment phase should be seen as a long-term competitive advantage. Although economic profitability is decisive when deciding on the execution of a project, the inclusion of sustainability variables could be decisive for the approval process, both with boards, shareholders and regulatory entities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
