In a Chile marked by a water crisis generated by climate change, desalination emerges as an encouraging response, although not without challenges. Currently, there are 24 desalination plants operating in the country, with a total installed capacity nationwide of 9,482 liters per second (ACADES) and supplying mainly the mining and sanitary sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At PA Engineering we have been designing desalination plants for nine years, both for the mining industry and for human consumption, in Chile and Peru, with total capacities of more than 3,000 liters per second. Among the projects we have carried out, we are proud of the plant we designed in Punta Zorro, Copiap\u00f3, for INIMA, which is the largest state desalination plant for human consumption in Latin America and supplies more than 210 thousand people in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chile has been a pioneer in this water solution in Latin America. Examples of this are the cases of Antofagasta and Tocopilla, where 80% and 100% of the population respectively consume desalinated water, another evidence of the ability of this technology to ensure human consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a partner company since the beginning of ACADES, the recent Simple Urgency granted to the bill “On the Use of Seawater for Desalination”, together with the Executive’s Substitute Indication, which replaces the original text with the aim of introducing important changes, such as creating the desalination concession, mark a significant advance for the sector. These changes seek to speed up the processing of environmental permits and grant legal certainty to investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the international level, desalination has proven to be a key tool to address water scarcity. In Israel, for example, about 80% of drinking water comes from desalination plants, while Saudi Arabia is a world leader in desalination capacity, with plants producing over 13 million cubic meters of water daily. Both countries have managed to combine technology with strict regulations, to mitigate environmental impact and make projects viable from every point of view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this sense, Chile has also decided to move towards a “more orderly” desalination development.  The Senate’s Commission on Water Resources, Desertification and Drought, where the initiative is currently being debated, also incorporates a National Desalination Strategy, which establishes the future vision that the industry should have, while promoting its sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In short, we are celebrating Water and Desalination Day, which, although it is not the only response to the water crisis, is a key piece within a comprehensive approach together with water efficiency, water reuse and protection of natural sources.
But for desalination to fulfill its mission of helping to mitigate the water crisis, it is necessary that both the Legislative and Executive Branches give priority to the Bill, not only so that Chile has a clear regulation, an environment conducive to investment and the realization of more and better desalination projects, but also because, currently, the execution time of these projects is on average 8 to 10 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Bill is a part of the necessary actions. In addition, there must be diligence and a sense of urgency in all agencies and groups involved in the process, as to minimize obstacles and delays.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
