The engineering company Pares&Alvarez (P&A) achieved ISO 19650 or Building Information Modelling (BIM) certification, thus becoming the first Chilean company to obtain certification in the country. “This is a great step for us, which although it involved a lot of work, allows us to deliver robust, quality and useful engineering products for the customer,” said the CEO, V\u00edctor Contreras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The process formally began at the end of 2020 with a diagnosis and during 2021 and 2022 the focus was on the organization of the tasks and equipment necessary to achieve certification, which involved collaborative work between the P&A areas, the implementation of new processes and involved the training of more than 200 employees in the methodology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Likewise, Ricardo Contreras, Operational Excellence Manager of the company, explained that Information Modelling for Construction is a process in which several teams participate, and different software is used depending on the product to be obtained or the functionality to be represented. “The BIM methodology is a collaborative multidisciplinary process in which physical and functional digital representations of a building or an industrial facility are generated and managed, which allows the creation and management of a project throughout its life cycle, facilitating the extraction of information for different uses, generally focused on construction, but it also includes costs, energy analysis, ergonomic analysis and safety, among others,” added the executive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In modelling, several actors converge in coordination incorporating information that allows the extraction of multidisciplinary products for specific purposes such as costs, construction and maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Modes of use<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n In its most basic way, the BIM methodology helps to consolidate all this information within a model that is functional to the coordination of a project, but also acts as a library, in which various actors can retrieve the information that is relevant to them from engineering, construction, commissioning and maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This availability of modelled and coordinated information makes it possible to avoid reprocesses and lack of communication and understanding between the parties by having the possibility of discussing the projected solutions with all interested parties (customer, builders, suppliers, etc.) and incorporates, in an agile way, the modifications in the model prior to the information extraction stage. which results in a better overall result of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In addition, it allows better decisions to be made early, since solutions can be modelled and, therefore, visualized more quickly and with all those involved, instead of each participant designing independently and then consolidating the information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On the other hand, advanced use involves the implementation of information packaging for construction, an area that is highly valued by the construction industry and that P&A has already integrated into the development of its projects. Broadly speaking, this consists of defining early on a constructability strategy organized in work packages for which units of information are generated that can be transferred to the final construction crew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Contreras believes that this methodology has an important development potential in the national market, as more actors such as suppliers, developers, technical entities, among others, are involved.
